Is Texas Senate Bill 11 enough to keep school safe?

School shootings have been a topic of discussion this past couple of years mainly because of the tragedy that happened in Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida. Losing the life of 17 innocent lives and 17 injured sparked the debate for gun legislation and the gun epidemic in the US. And closer to home, the tragedy that happened in Santa Fe High School in Santa Fe, Texas, we lost 10 innocent lives and 14 injured. Some people who want more gun legislation will likely agree that school shootings are a problem. Those who don't want any more gun legislation will probably agree that school shooting is not a problem.

In 2017, there were 17,284 murders in the US. In 2018, there were 114 deaths in school shootings. Statistically, this is nothing compared to the number of total deaths in the US. Many people will use this and brush off that school problems are a problem. If you think school shootings are a problem or not is up to you. Something people on both sides of the political spectrum is that schools need more security. How can we do that?

Texas Senate Bill 11 has gone through several amendments since it first passed in 2015. It mainly included that students and teachers 21 and older with a license to conceal carry can do so on a college campus. Just recently, it added to the bill by trying to strengthen mental health initiatives in school. equip teachers and substitute teachers with adequate communication devices for when emergencies happen and have a safety committee meeting once per semester.

The important question comes, is this enough to keep Texas school safe? Or will more gun regulation on guns be the answer? Since this is Texas, we went with having more guns on campus. Will this prevent future school shootings here in Texas? Even if it doesn't work, gun regulation will never happen here in Texas and instead, it will encourage more guns.

  1. My classmates post titled "Is Texas Senate Bill 11 enough to keep school safe?" Influences me to answer the question in a second. Ruben's post values human living. Ruben also shares the facts about the most recent sickening school shootings. This agenda cannot be forgotten, we progress as a nation every few months and then it is back on the news, young world changers are publicly slaughtered by a bullet. I connect with the Santa Fe school shooting near Santa Fe, and it tears apart my own heart to remind myself that even in a dreamy land of Houstonian people, evil lurks to kill. Fourth, while I read the landmarks the school shootings took place, I don't see letters I see young people suffering from the lack of order in this country. Ruben asks, "How do we stop this?" How did the anguish even start? We are left with so many questions everyday, and the truth is knowledge can only teach people, their purpose cannot be lost in this sea of confusion. The authorities have to do something! Something has to be done. And it is not just one state, sure Ruben agrees that Texas is never going to change and will remain the same. But I disagree with that because Representative Beto changed the perspective of Texans. That is half the state of Texas, perhaps gun policy can be changed. In short, Ruben did an excellent blog because the innocent lives of the young should always be brought to light.
