"Why Can't I Adequately Defend Myself?" Critique by Ruben Zavala

I read this blog on Texas Scorecard called "Why Can't I Adequately Defend Myself?" by Keeley Dorman. Dorman talked about how she feels that we need to make it easier to carry weapons in college campuses. I disagree with a lot of what Dorman has to say, firstly, she doesn't agree that in order to have a Licence to Carry you must be 21 years old. She believes an 18-year-old should be allowed to carry a weapon on campus. This is truly absurd and in no way will this promote a safe environment. Some would argue that 21 isn't even mature enough to have a license to carry.

Dorman sees these laws as Texas not wanting adults to protect themselves but many people who have lived longer than me can tell you they have never thought of carrying a gun for their safety. Dorman compares a gun to the likes of pepper spray, rape whistles, and knives which don't make any sense because a gun is several times more lethal than any of those mentioned.

With the recent school shootings, making it easier for 18-year-old to carry on campus will not help anyone's safety. An 18-year-old will need lots of hours of experience to even know how to discharge a gun correctly. A better solution is to keep the minimum age of getting a license to carry to 21 and add more on-site police officers for our safety.
